Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using DMVCosts ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Service.

These Terms apply to all visitors and users. By using the Service, you represent that you are at least 18 years of age or have the permission and supervision of a parent or legal guardian.

Service Description

DMVCosts is a free collection of interactive vehicle-fee calculators and fee guides for every US state, including:

  • Tax, title & license calculators - estimate the full out-the-door government cost of buying a vehicle in your state.
  • Sales tax, registration & renewal, and title transfer calculators - including gifted vehicles, boats, and motorcycles, with state-specific rules and guidance.
  • Everything client-side - no account is required, and every calculation runs in your own browser; nothing you type is sent to our servers.

Free & ad-supported: the Service is provided free of charge and may be supported by advertisements. In regions where consent is required (such as the EEA/UK under GDPR, or US states under CCPA/CPRA), you will be shown a consent dialog before personalized ads are displayed.

Estimates Only - No Legal, Tax, or Financial Advice

DMVCosts provides estimates for informational purposes only. It is not a law firm, tax advisor, or financial advisor, and nothing on this site is legal, tax, or financial advice.

The calculators and fee guides are built from published state fee schedules and statutes, but they are simplifications of systems that involve county surcharges, local option taxes, vehicle-specific factors, and frequent legislative changes. The only binding amounts are the ones quoted by your state agency - your DMV, county tax office, or comptroller.

Fees and tax rates change and vary by state, county, and city, and every transaction is different. We make reasonable efforts to keep fee data current and accurate, but we cannot guarantee that any estimate is complete, up-to-date, or exact for your circumstances. Always verify the final amount with your state or county agency before budgeting, signing, or paying.

Acceptable Use

When using DMVCosts, you agree to:

  • Use the Service only for lawful purposes
  • Not misrepresent DMVCosts estimates as official quotes from any government agency
  • Not attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, its servers, or networks
  • Not use bots, scrapers, or other automated systems to access the Service
  • Not damage, disable, overburden, or impair the Service
  • Not abuse the contact form or push-notification infrastructure
  • Comply with all laws and regulations applicable in your jurisdiction

Fair Use

DMVCosts has no download limits, quotas, or metering - the calculators are unlimited and free. To keep it that way for everyone, we reserve the right to restrict traffic that abuses the Service:

Abuse protection

Automated scraping, bulk requests, contact-form spam, and attempts to disrupt the Service may be blocked or rate-limited using your IP address and an anonymous visitor identifier. Ordinary human use - however heavy - will never hit these protections.

Repeated attempts to circumvent these protections may result in temporary or permanent suspension of access to the Service.

Intellectual Property

Our Service and content

The Service - its design, code, calculators, fee guides, state data compilations, graphics, and branding - is owned by DMVCosts and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You are granted a free, non-exclusive license to use the calculators and guides for your personal or business purposes. You may not redistribute, resell, or sublicense the Service's content or copy substantial parts of the Service.

Your inputs

Anything you type into a calculator stays in your browser and never reaches us - so there is nothing for us to claim, use, or license. Your numbers are, and remain, entirely yours.

Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

No warranty

THE SERVICE AND ALL ESTIMATES, CALCULATORS, AND FEE GUIDES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any estimate will match the amount ultimately charged by your state, county, or local agency.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, DMVCOSTS AND ITS OPERATORS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES - INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL - ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE, OR FROM ANY DECISION MADE OR ACTION TAKEN IN RELIANCE ON AN ESTIMATE PRODUCED BY THE SERVICE.

Your responsibility: you are solely responsible for verifying fees, taxes, and deadlines with your state agency before relying on them - the DMV, county tax office, or comptroller is the only source of binding amounts. When in doubt, call them or check their official website.

Service Availability

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee the Service will be available at all times. It may be interrupted by maintenance, technical failures, third-party outages, or events beyond our reasonable control. We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part of it) at any time, with or without notice, without liability to you.

Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction in which DMVCosts operates, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising out of these Terms or the Service shall first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation; if that fails, it shall be resolved in the courts or arbitration forums of competent jurisdiction in that location.

Changes to These Terms

We may modify these Terms at any time. When we do, we will post the updated Terms on this page and update the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

Severability & Entire Agreement

If any provision of these Terms is held invalid or unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and DMVCosts regarding the Service.
