Overview
The real surprise is titling and tax. Most existing boats never need an Alabama title at all - titling only became mandatory in 2024, and only for vessels built after December 31, 2023, boats under 18 feet with a 75-horsepower-or-larger engine, or any vessel newly making Alabama its state of principal use. And the sales tax rate depends on how the deal is structured: a boat, motor, and trailer sold together as one unit gets the reduced 2%-plus-local automotive rate, but a motor or boat sold on its own is taxed at the general 4% rate.

02 - Step by step
How to register a boat in Alabama
- 1
Confirm the vessel has a Hull Identification Number (HIN); homemade or pre-1972 boats need a Marine Patrol-assigned HIN first.
- 2
Determine if titling applies: built after Dec 31, 2023, under 18 ft with a 75+ hp motor, or newly principal-used in Alabama.
- 3
Bring the bill of sale, HIN documentation, and ID to your county probate office or license commissioner.
- 4
Pay the length-class registration fee plus the $2 issuance fee, and any sales tax owed on the purchase.
- 5
Display your Alabama registration numbers and current decal on both sides of the bow as required.

Alabama boat registration FAQ
How much does it cost to register a boat in Alabama?
Annually: $20 for under 16 feet, $25 for 16–25'11", $75 for 26–39'11", and $100 for 40 feet and over - each figure already includes the $2 issuance fee. It's not prorated, so a mid-year registration still costs the full annual amount.
Do I need a title for my boat in Alabama?
Probably not. Titling only became mandatory starting January 1, 2024, and only applies to vessels constructed after December 31, 2023, any vessel under 18 feet powered by a 75-horsepower-or-larger engine, or a vessel for which Alabama newly becomes the state of principal use. Most existing, previously-registered boats are unaffected.
Why would the same boat purchase get taxed at two different rates?
Alabama's administrative code taxes a boat, motor, and trailer sold together as one unit at the reduced 2% + local automotive rate - the same treatment as a car. But if you buy just the hull, or just the motor, separately, that sale is taxed at the general 4% rate instead. How the deal is packaged changes your tax bill.
Where do I actually register my boat - the DMV or somewhere else?
Your county probate judge's office or license commissioner, the same place you register your car. They process it on behalf of ALEA's Marine Patrol Division, which is the agency that actually regulates boating in Alabama.
Do kayaks or canoes need to be registered?
Unpowered vessels like canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards generally don't need registration. Add a motor of any size, and registration becomes mandatory regardless of the boat's length.
What about a boat trailer - does it register with Marine Patrol too?
No - a boat trailer is a vehicle and registers through the standard trailer categories at your county office ($12–$60 depending on type), completely separate from the boat's own Marine Patrol registration.
