Iowa Boat Registration Fees

Boats in Iowa go through your county recorder, not the DOT or the treasurer - the Department of Natural Resources sets the rules, but recorders collect the money locally. Every registration runs on the same statewide 3-year cycle, expiring April 30 regardless of when you first registered, so a boat bought in October still expires the same April as one bought the previous spring. Fees scale with length and whether the vessel has a motor or sail: $17.65 for three years on any unpowered, unsailed boat (a jon boat with oars, say), $28.15 under 16 feet with a motor or sail, $41.65 from 16 up to 26 feet, $75 from 26 up to 40 feet, and $150 at 40 feet and beyond.

All Iowa boat registrations expire April 30 regardless of purchase date. A trailer over 2,000 lbs registers at $30/year instead of $20.

Overview

Boats 17 feet and longer need a title (canoes and kayaks are exempt regardless of length) at $13.50, plus another $13.50 if a lender holds a lien. Sales tax on the boat itself is Iowa's regular 6% state sales tax plus up to 1% local option - a completely different system from the 5% fee for new registration that applies to cars. If the sale includes a trailer, the trailer is a vehicle: it pays the 5% fee for new registration and its own annual county registration, separately from the boat's DNR paperwork. Renew within 30 days of a private-party purchase; miss the April 30 expiration and a flat $5 penalty applies.

Iowa boat registration FAQ

How much does it cost to register a boat in Iowa?

For three years: $17.65 for an unpowered, unsailed boat of any length, $28.15 under 16 feet with a motor or sail, $41.65 for 16 up to 26 feet, $75 for 26 up to 40 feet, and $150 at 40 feet or more. Add $13.50 for a title if the boat is 17 feet or longer.

Do kayaks and canoes need to be registered in Iowa?

They still need registration if motorized (even a trolling motor triggers it), but canoes and kayaks are exempt from the title requirement regardless of length - a real difference from other boats 17 feet and up.

Why does my registration expire the same month as everyone else's?

Iowa runs boats on one statewide 3-year cycle that always expires April 30 - it isn't anniversary-based like a car. Buy in October and you're still due for renewal the following April 30 unless that falls in the next cycle.

Is boat sales tax the same as the car fee for new registration?

No - boats pay Iowa's ordinary 6% state sales tax (plus up to 1% local option in many counties), collected by the county treasurer. That's separate from the 5% + $10 fee for new registration that applies specifically to motor vehicles.

What about the trailer I use to haul my boat?

The trailer registers as a vehicle, completely separately from the boat. It owes the 5% + $10 fee for new registration on its own value at first titling, plus its own annual registration - $20 a year if it's 2,000 lbs or less, $30 if heavier.

What's the penalty for renewing my boat registration late?

A flat $5 penalty once you're past the April 30 expiration - modest compared to vehicle registration penalties, but the boat technically isn't legal to operate until it's paid.
