North Carolina Boat Registration Fees

Boats in North Carolina skip NCDMV entirely - registration and titling run through the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and you choose between a 1-year or 3-year term up front. Vessels under 26 feet with a title run $70 for one year or $130 for three; 26 feet and up costs $90 or $190. Under 14 feet, no title is required (except personal watercraft, which always need one regardless of length) and registration alone runs just $35 or $95.

Overview

Sales tax on a boat purchase isn't the Highway Use Tax that applies to cars - it's a separate general sales-and-use tax rate of 3%, but capped at $1,500 no matter how expensive the boat is, so a $200,000 yacht and a $50,000 boat owe the identical maximum tax. One gotcha NC boat owners routinely miss: registering with NCWRC does NOT satisfy your county's property tax requirement. Unlike cars, which get Tag & Tax Together bundling, boats must be separately listed with your county tax office every January 1–31, and you'll get an independent property tax bill later in the year.

North Carolina boat registration FAQ

How much does it cost to register a boat in North Carolina?

For 3 years: $95 under 14 ft (no title), $130 for 14–25'11" with title, $190 for 26 ft and up with title. First-time buyers add the 3% sales/use tax on the purchase price, capped at $1,500 total no matter the boat's value.

Do canoes and kayaks need to be registered in North Carolina?

No - non-motorized canoes, kayaks, and rowboats are exempt entirely. Add any motor, including a small trolling motor, and registration becomes mandatory regardless of the boat's length.

Why do jet skis need a title even though they're small?

Personal watercraft (jet skis) are titled in North Carolina no matter their length - the usual 'under 14 feet skips titling' rule specifically excludes PWCs. Budget for the $70 (1-year) or $130 (3-year) 'under 26 ft with title' bracket even for a jet ski well under that length.

I registered my boat with NCWRC - do I still owe county property tax?

Yes, and it's a genuinely separate process. Registering with the Wildlife Resources Commission satisfies your legal-operation requirement only. Every North Carolina county requires an annual personal property listing (January 1–31) for boats, and you'll get a distinct property tax bill from your county later in the year - nothing about the NCWRC fee covers that.

Is there sales tax on a used boat bought from a private seller?

Yes, 3% of the purchase price (or fair market value if the price looks understated), capped at $1,500 total. This is the general sales-and-use tax rate that applies specifically to boats and aircraft, not the Highway Use Tax that applies to cars.

Can I register a boat for just one year if I don't want the 3-year term?

Yes - every category on NCWRC's fee schedule offers both a 1-year and a 3-year price, and the 3-year option is proportionally cheaper per year. Most owners who plan to keep the boat take the 3-year term simply to avoid the annual paperwork.

What about a boat trailer - does that register with NCWRC too?

No - the trailer is a motor vehicle and registers with NCDMV like any other trailer ($32.25/year), completely separate from the boat's NCWRC registration and title.
