Overview
That $100 cap is a genuinely forgiving ceiling - a title left untransferred for two years still only costs $100 in penalties, not an escalating fortune. But you'll also owe VLT and registration if those lapse alongside the title, so a long-delayed transfer usually costs more than the title penalty alone once everything else catches up.
Sellers have their own move: file a sold notice with MVD the same day the car changes hands. It's free, takes a few minutes online through AZ MVD Now, and protects you from tickets, tolls, or liability tied to a car you no longer own but the buyer hasn't formally retitled yet.
