Overview
This calculator gives you the DMV-only registration total - it does not include the annual vehicle property tax that gets billed alongside it under Tag & Tax Together (that's a separate calculator on this site, since the tax portion depends on your vehicle's assessed value and your county's rate). If you're registering a car for the very first time, add the $66.75 title fee and 3% Highway Use Tax from our TTL calculator.

North Carolina registration fees FAQ
How much does it cost to register a car in North Carolina per year?
$46.25 for the base state registration. Add $15 if you're in Wake, Durham, or Orange County, $1 in Randolph County, or $214.50/$107.25 if the vehicle is fully electric or plug-in hybrid. This total does NOT include the separate annual vehicle property tax billed alongside it.
Why do Wake, Durham, and Orange County charge more for registration?
It funds regional public transit. The $15 breaks down as an $8 Regional Transit Authority fee plus a $7 county vehicle registration tax, both authorized under Chapter 105, Article 43 to support the Triangle's GoTriangle and local bus systems.
Is the electric vehicle fee really that much higher than gas cars pay in tax?
It's designed to replace the state motor fuels tax an EV never pays at the pump. At $214.50 a year, North Carolina's EV fee is among the higher state EV surcharges nationally - only a handful of states charge more. It adjusts every four years with inflation; the next reset is mid-2028.
Do I need a separate registration for a trailer?
Yes, at $32.25 a year for a standard trailer or semitrailer, or $18 for a house/camping trailer. Small utility trailers under a certain weight are sometimes exempt from titling but still need a plate - check with your License Plate Agency for your trailer's exact class.
Can I register online in North Carolina?
Renewals, yes, through NCDMV's online system once your Tag & Tax Together notice arrives. A brand-new registration tied to a title transfer has to happen in person at a License Plate Agency or NCDMV office.
What's the difference between registration and the Tag & Tax bill I get every year?
Registration is the flat $46.25-and-up fee on this page. Tag & Tax Together bundles that registration fee with your county's annual vehicle PROPERTY tax - a completely separate charge based on your car's assessed value and your county's tax rate - into one combined renewal notice.
