Alaska Motorcycle Registration Fees

Motorcycles, mopeds, and autocycles all register under one $60 biennial state fee in Alaska - cheaper than a passenger vehicle's $100, but riders still owe their borough's Motor Vehicle Registration Tax on top, calculated from the same chart that applies to trailers rather than the steeper passenger-vehicle brackets. That distinction matters: in Anchorage or Mat-Su a motorcycle's MVRT is a flat $20 regardless of age, while the equivalent car there can run up to $150.

The DMV collects this municipal tax on the state's behalf - where you live decides whether you owe it at all.

Alaska's model-year vehicles turn a year older every January 1st, not on the sale date.

Overview

Buying a used bike triggers the same $15 title fee as any vehicle, plus $15 more if you're financing it. There's no state sales tax to worry about anywhere in Alaska, and only Juneau and the Kenai Peninsula Borough have confirmed local sales taxes that would apply to a motorcycle purchase, each capped well below the sticker price.

Alaska motorcycle fees FAQ

How much does it cost to register a motorcycle in Alaska?

$60 for the state's 2-year base fee. Add your borough's MVRT for motorcycles and trailers: $0 in Fairbanks, $10 flat in Juneau, $20 flat in Anchorage or Mat-Su, and up to $40 flat in the Kodiak Island Borough. Most of these are flat rather than age-based, unlike the passenger-vehicle MVRT schedule.

Why is a motorcycle's MVRT often a flat rate while a car's changes by age?

The DMV chart groups motorcycles with trailers, and most boroughs set a single flat number for that category instead of the age-tiered brackets used for passenger vehicles. The Kenai Peninsula is an exception - its motorcycle/trailer rate does still step down slightly with age, from $20 to $10.

Do mopeds and e-bikes register the same way as motorcycles?

A moped or autocycle registers exactly like a motorcycle at the same $60 state fee and MVRT rate. Alaska defines 'motorcycle' broadly enough to fold both in - check with the DMV if you're unsure whether a specific electric two-wheeler qualifies as a moped or is exempt as a bicycle.

Is there sales tax on a motorcycle purchase in Alaska?

No state sales tax anywhere, and no local sales tax in most of the state. Juneau (5%, capped at $15,000 of price) and the Kenai Peninsula Borough (3%, capped at $500) are the two confirmed exceptions if the sale happens within their boundaries.

Can a motorcycle get permanent Z-tab registration?

Yes, on the same terms as a car: it needs to be 8 years old or older and registered in an eligible area (Mat-Su Borough or Fairbanks North Star Borough for vehicles; Anchorage covers trailers only). The one-time surcharge is the same $25.

What if I just bought a used motorcycle out of state and I'm titling it here for the first time?

You'll pay the $15 title fee, the $60 registration, and your borough's MVRT in one visit - the same combination a car buyer pays, just at the motorcycle's lower base rate.
