D.C. Tax, Title & Registration Calculator

The District doesn't charge a vehicle sales tax at all - it charges an excise tax instead, and that excise tax is unlike anything in the other 49 states. Instead of a flat percentage of what you paid, DC taxes your vehicle's NADA book value against a grid that cross-references unladen weight and EPA city MPG. A Chevy Bolt owner pays 1% of book value. A buyer of a 5,000-lb, 18-mpg Suburban pays 11%. Same dealership, same day, wildly different bill - and it has nothing to do with your negotiated price, because the tax is based on book value, not the receipt.

Not your negotiated price - DC taxes the NADA Eastern Region book value.

Unladen (curb) weight - check the vehicle's federal weight sticker, not GVWR.

Look up the window-sticker city MPG on fueleconomy.gov - DC uses city MPG, not combined or MPGe.

Estimated tax, title & first-year total

$1,065.00

  • Excise tax - 3.1% (3,499 lbs or less, 26–30 mpg city)$930.00
  • Title fee$30.00
  • Registration (annual)$70.00
  • First inspection$35.00

Vehicles 6,000 lbs+ (Class IV) pay more than the Class III figure shown - $550 plus $75 per 1,000 lbs over 10,000 lbs. Trade-ins never reduce the excise tax.

Overview

On top of the excise tax you'll owe a flat $30 title fee, registration that scales sharply by weight class ($70 for a compact car up to $550+ for a heavy truck), and the $35 biennial inspection almost every vehicle needs before its first DC tag. Enter your numbers below - pick the vehicle's weight band and city MPG (or select 'electric' for a BEV) and the calculator runs the actual DC DMV grid, not a flat-rate guess.

02 - Step by step

How to title and register a vehicle in D.C.

  1. 1

Get the vehicle inspected at the DC DMV Inspection Station, 1001 Half Street SW - required before a first-time DC title.

  2. 2

Complete the Certificate of Title/Registration Application, listing every owner exactly as they'll appear on the title.

  3. 3

Bring the signed title (or MSO for new vehicles), proof of DC insurance, and photo ID to a DC DMV service center.

  4. 4

Pay the excise tax (based on NADA fair market value, not your price), the $30 title fee, and the weight-based registration.

  5. 5

Your tags are issued the same visit; a new-purchase temporary tag is good for 45 days if you need to drive before this appointment.

Washington D.C. tax, title & license FAQ

How much is tax, title and tags on a $30,000 car in D.C.?

It depends entirely on MPG and weight, not the $30,000 price - DC taxes NADA book value. A 3,400-lb sedan rated 28 mpg city with a $30,000 book value owes 3.1% excise ($930), plus a $30 title and $70 registration: about $1,030 total. The same book value on a 5,200-lb, 17-mpg SUV owes 11% ($3,300) plus $30 title and $300 registration: about $3,630.

Why does D.C. tax my car's 'fair market value' instead of what I actually paid?

By law the excise tax is calculated against the current NADA Business Guide (Eastern Region) value at the time you title the vehicle - not your purchase price and not any trade-in credit. Get a great deal below book value and you still owe tax on the book number; overpay and you still only owe tax on the book number.

Are electric vehicles really taxed less in D.C.?

Yes, though not zero anymore. Since the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Amendment Act of 2024 took effect (February 17, 2025), 100% electric vehicles pay 1.0%–3.0% of book value depending on weight - down from the old flat exemption, but still the cheapest bracket on the grid by a wide margin versus a comparable gas vehicle.

Does a trade-in lower my D.C. excise tax?

No - and this catches people off guard. Because the tax is levied on the purchased vehicle's own NADA value, not on 'price minus trade-in' like most states, handing over a trade-in doesn't reduce the excise bill by a single dollar. It only affects what you owe the dealer.

Do I need the inspection before I can title the car?

Yes for most first-time DC titles - the vehicle must pass at the single DC DMV Inspection Station on Half Street SW before registration is issued. New vehicles bought from a dealer sometimes get a short inspection deferral; check at the time of sale.

I qualify for the DC Earned Income Tax Credit - do I get a tax break?

You get a choice, not always a discount: EITC-certified filers can elect a flat weight-only rate (6% / 7% / 8%) instead of the MPG-adjusted grid, whichever computes lower for their specific vehicle. Bring your EITC certification from the Office of Tax and Revenue when you title.
