D.C. Registration Renewal: What It Costs

Renewing in D.C. means paying your weight-class fee again - $70 to $550+ depending on the vehicle - for whichever term you choose, 1 or 2 years. The wrinkle almost every other state doesn't have: every passenger vehicle needs a passing inspection every two years, and D.C. runs exactly one government inspection station for the entire District, at 1001 Half Street SW. There's no network of private inspection shops like most states use - everyone from Georgetown to Anacostia funnels through the same building (or one of two self-service emissions kiosks at Fort Stanton and Takoma recreation centers, for eligible vehicles).

Overview

Miss your registration or inspection date and D.C. doesn't nickel-and-dime you with tiny daily penalties - it's a flat $100 fine if you're caught unregistered within 30 days of expiration, jumping to $200 plus the real risk of impoundment past that. The calculator below totals your renewal, inspection, and any Residential Parking Permit due at the same time.

Washington D.C. renewal cost FAQ

How much does it cost to renew D.C. registration?

The same as first-time registration for your weight class: $70/yr for Class I up to $550+/yr for Class IV, times however many years (1 or 2) you choose to renew for. Add $35 if your biennial inspection is also due.

Is there really only one inspection station in the whole city?

Yes - the DC DMV Inspection Station at 1001 Half Street SW is the sole government facility for the entire District. It's open Tuesday–Friday, 7am–3pm, first-come first-served with no online appointment booking, which means real queues at peak times. Two self-service emissions kiosks (Fort Stanton and Takoma rec centers) handle a subset of eligible vehicles.

What happens if I fail inspection?

You get two free re-inspections within 20 calendar days of the original test. A third attempt in that window costs $35. After 20 days, it's treated as a new inspection cycle.

What's the penalty for letting my registration lapse?

D.C. issues a flat $100 fine for driving unregistered within 30 days of your card's expiration date - not the renewal-notice date. Past 30 days, the fine rises to $200 and the vehicle risks impoundment.

Can I renew entirely online?

Passenger-class vehicles with a current inspection on file can renew registration online through DC DMV. If your inspection is also expiring, you must physically pass it at Half Street (or a qualifying kiosk) before the online renewal will process.
