Connecticut Registration Renewal: What It Costs

Renewing in Connecticut happens once every three years for most drivers, not annually - your notice arrives ahead of the expiration printed on your registration. The renewal bill itself is close to what you paid the first time: base fee, admin fee, Clean Air Act fee, and another 3 years of the Passport to the Parks charge. The one-time Greenhouse Gas fee from a new-vehicle purchase doesn't come back.

$217.00

  • Base registration (passenger vehicle, 3-year term)$120.00
  • Administrative fee$10.00
  • Federal Clean Air Act feewaived for EVs$15.00
  • Passport to the Parks fee (3 yrs @ $24/yr)$72.00

A town tax hold overrides everything else - DMV will not process any renewal, on any vehicle you own, until it's cleared.

Overview

What can stop your renewal cold has nothing to do with any of those fees: if your town has reported you delinquent on motor vehicle property tax, state law requires the DMV to deny the renewal outright until the town clears you electronically. There's no paper release anymore - the hold lifts overnight once the balance is paid. Below, both the normal renewal math and a check for whether a tax hold would block you.

02 - Step by step

How to renew your registration in Connecticut

  1. 1

Check whether emissions testing is due - gas/diesel vehicles between roughly 4 and 24 model years old need a passing test on file.

  2. 2

Pass your emissions test at a licensed test center if due; results upload to the DMV automatically.

  3. 3

Confirm you have no outstanding town motor vehicle tax - a delinquent balance blocks renewal statewide.

  4. 4

Renew online, by mail, or in person before your registration's expiration date printed on the card.

  5. 5

Pay the base fee, admin fee, Clean Air Act fee, and 3 years of Passport to the Parks in one transaction.

Connecticut renewal cost FAQ

How much does a Connecticut registration renewal cost?

About $117 for a standard passenger vehicle's 3-year renewal: $120 base + $10 admin + $15 Clean Air Act fee + $72 Passport to the Parks, though the base and Clean Air Act fee drop for EVs. Add $20 if an emissions test is due.

Can unpaid town car tax really stop me from renewing?

Yes - under CGS §14-33, the DMV must deny registration renewal (on any vehicle, boat, or snowmobile you own) if your town reports you delinquent on motor vehicle property tax. The hold covers everything you own, not just the taxed vehicle, and only your town can clear it - DMV no longer accepts a paper release, only an electronic one, processed overnight.

How do I know if my vehicle needs an emissions test to renew?

Gas and diesel vehicles roughly 4 to 24 model years old test biennially; model year 2000-and-older vehicles, EVs, motorcycles, and vehicles over 10,000 lbs are exempt. Your renewal notice states whether a test is due.

What happens if I miss my emissions test deadline?

A $20 late fee applies once you're more than 30 days past your test due date, on top of the standard $20 test fee itself - both paid at the test center, separate from your DMV renewal payment.

Is there a grace period after my registration expires?

Five days. Renew by day 5 and there's no penalty; renew on day 6 or later and a $10 late fee applies on top of the normal renewal cost.

Do I need to visit the DMV in person to renew?

No - most CT renewals with no emissions issue and no tax hold can be completed online through the DMV's self-service portal using your plate number, with the sticker mailed to you.
