Maryland Registration Renewal: What It Costs

Your Maryland renewal notice arrives before your two-year sticker expires, and the base bill is the same weight-class math as a new registration: $241 to $383 depending on your vehicle, already including the $40-a-year EMS surcharge. Most owners renew through myMVA Online Services rather than visiting a branch - Maryland has no county-level renewal option the way some states do.

Annual renewal total

$160.50

  • Base registration (≤ 3,500 lbs)$120.50
  • EMS System surchargeannual, all cars & motorcycles$40.00

Double the annual figure for the amount due on Maryland's standard 2-year registration term; the VEIP test is only required once per 2-year cycle in participating counties.

Overview

If your vehicle is registered in one of Maryland's 14 VEIP counties - Baltimore City and County, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, and Washington - a passing emissions test has to be on file before the system lets you renew. That test now costs $30 at a full-service station or $26 at a self-service kiosk, up sharply from the $14 flat fee that stood for nearly three decades before July 2025.

Maryland renewal cost FAQ

How much is it to renew registration in Maryland?

The same as a new registration for your class: $241 for ≤3,500 lbs, $251 for 3,501–3,700 lbs, or $383 over 3,700 lbs, every two years. Add $250 (ZEV) or $200 (PHEV) if your vehicle qualifies for the electric-vehicle surcharge.

Do I need an emissions test to renew in Maryland?

Only if your vehicle is registered in one of the 14 VEIP counties and is a gasoline vehicle from model year 1996 or newer (diesel 2008 or newer, under 14,000 lbs). New vehicles get a grace period - the first test isn't due until 6 years after the original title date.

What if I miss my VEIP testing deadline?

A $30 late fee applies immediately, then another $30 stacks on every four weeks you remain untested. You can request an extension before the deadline to avoid the penalty if you genuinely can't make it in time.

Is renewing online through myMVA cheaper than in person?

The fee itself is the same either way, but myMVA Online Services skips the branch visit entirely for eligible vehicles - a real time savings given Maryland routes everything through the MVA rather than a local office.

Can I renew if my registration already expired?

Yes, through myMVA or a branch, but driving on an expired registration risks a citation, and if payment lapses for 120+ days after a renewal notice, the account can be referred to the state's Central Collection Unit for further collection action.

Do trailers need a VEIP test to renew?

No - VEIP only applies to gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles and light trucks meeting the model-year criteria. Trailers, being unpowered, never test and never pay the EMS surcharge either.
