Utah Registration Renewal: What It Costs

Every Utah registration is annual, and the renewal bill is the same formula as a first-time registration: the $44 base fee, small statutory add-ons, and the vehicle's age-based uniform fee, which only gets cheaper as the car ages. There's no safety-inspection stop to schedule anymore - Utah dropped routine safety inspections statewide back in 2018 - but if you're in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, or Cache County, an emissions test is still required unless your vehicle is within its first six model years.

Combined sales tax and county add-on fees both depend on where the vehicle is registered - Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber also require emissions testing.

Utah's uniform fee steps down every three years instead of being reassessed on the vehicle's value like a county property tax bill.

EV owners can swap the $180 flat fee for the Road Usage Charge (1.25¢/mile, capped at $180) if they drive fewer than about 14,400 miles a year.

Renewal total

$170.50

  • Base registration (≤14,000 lbs)$44.00
  • Uninsured motorist identification fee$1.00
  • Driver education fee$2.50
  • County corridor preservation fee11 growth-corridor counties$10.00
  • Air quality (APC) fee5 emissions counties$3.00
  • Uniform fee in lieu of property tax (3–5 years old)$110.00

If your vehicle needs an emissions test this cycle, budget an extra $20–$40 paid to the test station - it isn't collected by the DMV.

Utah renewal cost FAQ

How much will my Utah renewal actually be this year?

Take the $44 (car) or $46 (motorcycle) base fee, add $3.50 in statutory fees, add your county's corridor/air-quality fees if applicable, then add the uniform fee for your vehicle's current age bracket - it drops every three years, so your bill shrinks slightly each cycle even with no other changes.

Is there a grace period if I renew a few days late in Utah?

No formal grace period exists - driving on an expired registration risks a citation the moment it lapses. Renewal Express lets you renew up to a couple of months before expiration, so there's little reason to cut it close.

Which counties require an emissions test to renew?

Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, and Cache. In all five, vehicles within their first six model years are exempt; once a vehicle passes that point it needs a passing emissions test, generally every other year timed to match your model year's odd/even parity.

Do I need a safety inspection to renew in Utah?

No - Utah eliminated the routine safety-inspection requirement for private passenger vehicles effective January 1, 2018. It survives only for a few edge cases: rebuilt-title vehicles, first-time street-legal ATV registrations, and three-axle motorhomes.

Can I renew a Utah registration that's been expired for months?

Yes, Renewal Express and DMV offices still process it - there isn't a separate 'delinquent renewal' penalty schedule the way some states have. You just owe the normal renewal fees, plus you've been risking a citation for every day driven on the expired registration.
