Overview
Once you're square with the county, the DFA side is simple - the same weight-based fee you paid last year ($17, $25, or $30 for a passenger car; $21 flat for a personal pickup; $7 or $3 for a motorcycle), plus any EV or hybrid surcharge. The calculator below covers both halves: the county's personal property tax, using Arkansas's 20%-of-value assessment ratio, and the state's registration renewal fee.

Arkansas renewal cost FAQ
Why won't Arkansas let me renew my registration online?
The system checks two things automatically: that you've assessed the vehicle with your county assessor this year and that you don't owe delinquent personal property tax. Either one being unresolved blocks the transaction until you fix it with the county - the DFA can't override it.
What is 'assessing' a vehicle, exactly?
It's reporting the vehicle to your county assessor as personal property you own, so the county can bill you the personal property tax it funds schools and local services with. You must do it every year between January 1 and May 31, even if the vehicle's value hasn't changed.
How is my vehicle's personal property tax actually calculated?
The assessor sets your vehicle's assessed value at 20% of its market value (typically a NADA-style guide value), then multiplies that by your county and school district's combined millage rate. A $15,000 car assessed at $3,000 and taxed at 50 mills owes $150 for the year - but millage varies significantly by county and even by school district within a county.
What happens if I miss the May 31 assessment deadline?
A 10% penalty is added to your personal property tax bill for being late, on top of whatever you owed. It doesn't affect the registration fee itself, but you still can't renew your tag until the tax (plus the penalty) is paid.
Does renewing early avoid the assessment requirement?
No - the assessment requirement is annual and tied to the calendar year, not your registration's expiration month. You can renew registration any time within its window, but you still need a current-year assessment and a clean county tax account on file first.
