Idaho Registration Renewal: What It Costs Now

Renewing in Idaho got a little simpler in 2026: as of July 1, the state stopped printing the annual windshield-plate sticker altogether, so your renewal payment now buys an electronic record instead of a decal to scrape off next year. The cost itself hasn't changed - it's still your vehicle's age bracket ($69, $57, or $45), plus $4.25 in flat state fees and your county's small add-on.

Your numbers

Idaho's 44 county assessor offices each set their own small administrative add-on - this changes your total by a few dollars, not the state's age-based fee.

Renewal total

$69.25

  • Registration (vehicle 3–6 years old)$57.00
  • County assessor admin fee$8.00
  • Emergency Medical Services fee$1.25
  • Idaho State Police fee$3.00

No emissions test applies anywhere in Idaho, and no physical sticker is issued as of July 1, 2026 - your payment updates the electronic record only.

Overview

There's also nothing to fail: Idaho's only emissions-testing program, run in Ada and Canyon counties and the city of Kuna, was repealed and shut down back in mid-2023, and no county in the state has run one since. If you're used to scheduling a smog check before renewal, you can skip that step entirely here.

Idaho renewal cost FAQ

Do I still get a sticker to put on my plate?

No, not since July 1, 2026. Idaho repealed the sticker requirement to save on printing costs; officers now verify your registration status electronically during a stop. Renew on your normal schedule - the requirement to be current didn't go away, just the sticker.

Does any Idaho county require an emissions test to renew?

No. The state's only I/M program covered Ada and Canyon counties and the city of Kuna, and it ended when the legislature repealed the requirement and the EPA signed off in 2023. Renewal is emissions-free everywhere in Idaho now.

Why is my renewal cheaper than last year's?

Idaho's age-based fee only moves one direction as the car gets older - it drops from $69 to $57 once the vehicle turns 3, and again to $45 at year 7. If nothing else changed on your bill, that's the age bracket doing its job.

Can I renew online?

Yes - most counties offer online renewal through their own portal or ITD's system, and it's the fastest option now that there's no sticker to mail out.

What if I let my registration lapse for a few months?

You can still renew directly; Idaho doesn't compound a monthly late-renewal penalty onto registration itself. Just don't drive on it lapsed - that's a separate citation risk, and if you're also overdue transferring a title, that carries its own flat $20 penalty.
