Colorado Registration Renewal: What Changes Each Year

Colorado is one of the few states where your registration bill is designed to fall every year you own the car - because the Specific Ownership Tax, which is usually the largest line on the notice, is pegged to the vehicle's age. A car that owed $606 in SOT its first year owes roughly $130 by year five and just $3 once it turns ten, even though the fixed fees around it (base registration, Road Safety and Bridge Safety Surcharges, clerk hire) stay essentially flat.

Overview

The other thing that changes at renewal, for about half a million Front Range drivers, is emissions: cars registered in the Denver-metro counties need a passing Air Care Colorado test before the system lets the renewal through, unless the vehicle is within its first seven model years. Run your renewal numbers below for whatever year of ownership you're in.

02 - Step by step

How to renew Colorado registration

  1. 1

Check whether your county requires an emissions test this cycle - Front Range counties test every other year past the 7-year new-vehicle exemption.

  2. 2

Pass the Air Care Colorado test if required; results upload to the DMV automatically.

  3. 3

Renew online at mydmv.colorado.gov, by mail, or at your county office using the renewal notice or your plate number.

  4. 4

The system recalculates your Specific Ownership Tax for the new model year automatically - it should be lower than last year.

  5. 5

Pay and display the new year/month tabs on your plate; keep the receipt if the tabs haven't arrived yet.

Colorado renewal cost FAQ

Why did my renewal drop by over $100 from last year?

That's the Specific Ownership Tax doing what it's designed to do - it steps down each year of the vehicle's life: 2.1% in year one, 1.5% in year two, 1.2% in year three, 0.9% in year four, then a flat 0.45% for years five through nine, and just $3 once the car turns ten. The fixed fees around it barely move, so the SOT drop is almost the whole story.

Do I need an emissions test to renew in Colorado?

Only if you're registered in a Front Range county - Denver, Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, Jefferson, and parts of Larimer and Weld. New vehicles are exempt for their first seven model years; after that, gasoline vehicles from 1982 onward test every two years at $35 through Air Care Colorado.

What if I renew a few weeks late?

There's no grace period - a $25 fee applies for the first month or any part of it you're overdue, another $25 for the second month, and so on up to a $100 cap. It's separate from and added on top of your Specific Ownership Tax and fixed registration fees.

Can I renew online even for an electric vehicle?

Yes - EV renewals work the same as any renewal online, they just carry the extra plug-in and road usage equalization fees (about $76 for a BEV, $63 for a PHEV for FY2026-27) alongside the usual SOT and fixed fee stack.

Does the Road Safety or Bridge Safety Surcharge change at renewal?

No - those are flat, weight-tiered amounts set by statute and currently reduced $3.70 by SB25-258 through early 2028; they don't decline with the vehicle's age the way the Specific Ownership Tax does.
