Delaware Registration Renewal: What It Costs

Renewing in Delaware is about as low-friction as vehicle registration gets: $40 a year for a car, $15 for a motorcycle, and the DMV mails a renewal notice roughly 90 days ahead of your expiration date. There's no local processing fee, no county surcharge, and no convenience-store markup - the number on the notice is the number you pay.

Vehicles past their 7th model year need a free biennial inspection at a DMV lane before renewal will process.

Overview

The one step that can slow you down is inspection. Vehicles in their first 7 model years are exempt entirely; after that, Delaware requires a safety-and-emissions check every two years, and it's free at state-run DMV inspection lanes - no third-party shop, no $25–$50 fee like many states charge. Renew late, though, and a flat $20 penalty gets added regardless of vehicle type.

Delaware renewal cost FAQ

How much is registration renewal in Delaware?

$40 a year for a standard car or truck, $15 for a motorcycle. Electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles add $60–$110 a year in alternative-fuel surcharges on top of the base fee.

Do I have to get my car inspected to renew?

Only if it's older than 7 model years. Newer vehicles renew without any inspection step. Once past that window, Delaware requires a free safety-and-emissions inspection at a state-run DMV lane every 2 years before the renewal will process.

What happens if I renew late?

A flat $20 late fee is added on top of the regular renewal cost once your registration has expired - there's no escalating daily or monthly penalty the way some states structure it. The fee is waived if the vehicle was already inspected before expiring or if it's been expired more than 12 months (a new registration process applies instead).

Can I renew online in Delaware?

Yes, for most vehicles that don't need an inspection first. If your vehicle is due for its biennial inspection, you generally need that completed at a DMV inspection lane before the online or mail renewal will go through.

Is the alternative-fuel surcharge new?

Yes - it took effect October 1, 2025 alongside the document-fee increase, under 21 Del. C. §2151A. It didn't exist before that date, so a renewal notice for an EV registered a year earlier may look different from this year's bill.
