Idaho Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator

Most states price registration off your car's weight or value. Idaho prices it off the calendar: a 1- or 2-year-old vehicle costs $69 a year to register, a 3- to 6-year-old costs $57, and once it turns 7 the fee locks in at $45 for the rest of its life. Every registration also carries a flat $1.25 Emergency Medical Services fee and $3.00 Idaho State Police fee, plus a small administrative fee your county assessor sets.

Idaho's 44 county assessor offices each set their own small administrative add-on - this changes your total by a few dollars, not the state's age-based fee.

  • County assessor admin feeset by your county$8.00

Overview

Electric vehicles pay an extra $140 a year and plug-in hybrids $75, replacing the gas tax those vehicles don't pay at the pump. The calculator below itemizes your exact annual cost by age bracket, vehicle type, and county - and as of July 1, 2026, Idaho no longer issues a physical sticker to display, so this fee buys you an electronic registration record instead of a decal.

02 - Step by step

How to register a vehicle in Idaho

  1. 1

Get Idaho liability insurance in place before you visit - you'll need proof.

  2. 2

Bring the title (or out-of-state title plus a VIN inspection if you're a new resident) and ID to your county assessor's motor vehicle desk.

  3. 3

The clerk looks up your vehicle's model year to place it in the correct age bracket and adds your county's small fee.

  4. 4

Pay the total; as of July 1, 2026 you won't get a physical sticker - your plate and the county's electronic record are your proof of registration.

  5. 5

Renew by your assigned registration month each year, or pay double up front for a 2-year registration.

Idaho registration fees FAQ

How much does it cost to register a car in Idaho per year?

$76.25–$91.25 for a standard passenger vehicle, depending on age and county: the $69/$57/$45 age-based fee, $4.25 in state EMS/police fees, and a $3–$14 county add-on. Electric vehicles add $140, plug-in hybrids add $75.

Why did my registration go up even though I didn't add anything?

Check your vehicle's age bracket. A car that just crossed from year 2 to year 3 drops from $69 to $57 - that's a decrease. Going the other direction (a fee that increased) usually means a county fee change or a newly added EV/PHEV surcharge, not the age fee itself, which only ever steps down.

Is motorcycle registration age-based too?

No - motorcycles and mopeds pay a flat $25 ($19 registration plus a $6 motorcycle safety program fee) no matter how old the bike is, plus the same $4.25 in state fees and your county's add-on.

Do I still need an emissions test to register in Idaho?

No, anywhere in the state. Idaho's only emissions testing program ran in Ada and Canyon counties and the city of Kuna; the legislature repealed the requirement and the EPA approved dropping it in mid-2023. There's no county left in Idaho that requires an emissions test to register or renew.

What's this about registration stickers disappearing?

Starting July 1, 2026, Idaho stopped issuing the annual sticker that used to go on your plate. Registration is now verified electronically by law enforcement - you still have to renew on schedule, you just don't get a physical decal to press onto the plate anymore.

Can I register for 2 years at once?

Yes, at most county offices - you simply pay twice the annual total up front. It doesn't lower the cost, but it means one fewer trip to the assessor's office.
