How much does it cost to register a car in Colorado?
Split into two very different pieces. The fixed fee stack - base registration, Road Safety Surcharge, Bridge Safety Surcharge, clerk hire, EMS, insurance and POST fees - runs about $50 to $65 a year depending on weight. On top of that sits the Specific Ownership Tax, which can range from a few dollars on an old car to several hundred dollars on a newer one.
Why does my neighbor's identical car cost more to register than mine?
Almost always the Specific Ownership Tax. It's locked to the vehicle's original MSRP and its age, not what you paid for it. Two identical trims registered the same year can differ if one had pricier factory options baked into its original sticker price.
What is the Road Safety Surcharge and why is it lower than I expected?
It funds road maintenance under the FASTER program and is normally $16-$39 depending on weight, but SB25-258 temporarily cut every tier by $3.70 for registrations between January 2026 and January 2028 - so a typical car currently pays $19.30 instead of $23.
Do heavier vehicles really pay more across the board?
Yes - nearly every piece of the Colorado stack is weight-tiered separately: the base fee uses a linear formula above 2,000 lbs, while the Road Safety and Bridge Safety Surcharges jump at 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 16,000-lb breakpoints. A 7,000-lb truck pays meaningfully more in base fee and surcharges than a 3,000-lb sedan, on top of any SOT difference from a pricier original MSRP.
How much extra do electric vehicles pay to register?
For FY2026-27, a battery-electric vehicle pays a $50.05 base plug-in fee plus a $26 road usage equalization fee - about $76.05 total. Plug-in hybrids pay the same $50.05 base plus a smaller $13 equalization fee, about $63.05 total. Both figures are on a schedule that rises each year through FY2031-32 to replace the gas tax EVs don't pay.
Can I register a new-to-me vehicle online in Colorado?
Online works for renewing a registration you already hold. A first-time registration - new purchase, new resident, or new-to-you private-party vehicle - has to go through your county motor vehicle office in person, since the county needs to verify the title and set the Specific Ownership Tax.
