Maine Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator

The state's own share of a Maine registration is small: $35 a year for a passenger vehicle, $21 for a motorcycle, $9 for a moped. What actually determines your bill is the excise tax your town collects first - 24 mills of the vehicle's original MSRP in year one, sliding down through 17.5, 13.5, 10, and 6.5 mills before settling at 4 mills from year six on. A newer, pricier vehicle can owe ten times more in excise than in registration.

Maine registration fees FAQ

How much does it cost to register a car in Maine per year?

The state fee is just $35, but total cost depends almost entirely on your town's excise tax bill - 24 mills of original MSRP in year one down to 4 mills from year six on. A new $35,000 car owes $840 in year-one excise alone, on top of the $35 registration and a small agent fee.

Why does my registration cost so much more than the $35 sticker price?

The $35 is only the state/town registration fee. Excise tax - a separate municipal tax on the vehicle's original MSRP - is collected in the same visit and is almost always the bigger number, especially in a vehicle's first few years.

Do trailers and mopeds pay excise tax too?

Registration fees for trailers and mopeds are flat and small ($9–$20), and this calculator applies excise only to cars and motorcycles, which is where it matters - check with your town if you're unsure whether a specific trailer class owes excise.

Can I register online instead of going to the town office?

Renewals, yes, through Rapid Renewal in participating towns - it handles both the excise payment and the registration in one online transaction. A brand-new registration on a just-purchased vehicle still needs an in-person visit for the title and insurance check.

Is the $4–$6 agent fee negotiable or avoidable?

It's set by each town's ordinance, so it's not negotiable, but it's small and unavoidable if you want the town to process the transaction. A few residents pay excise at the town and finish the registration by mail through a BMV branch instead, though this rarely saves money once postage and time are counted.
