Overview
The RTA line is the one that shocks people. If your address is in the urban parts of King, Pierce, or Snohomish counties, your tabs include 1.1% of your vehicle's value - but 'value' comes from a 1996-era depreciation schedule the courts let Sound Transit keep using while its older bonds are outstanding. That schedule says a 3-year-old vehicle is still worth 89% of its original sticker, so a $45,000-MSRP SUV generates a $440 RTA line on top of everything else. Electric vehicles add another $225 in flat fees.

Washington registration fees FAQ
Didn't Washington vote for $30 car tabs? Why is my bill $500?
Twice - I-695 in 1999 and I-976 in 2019, both led by Tim Eyman. The base fee genuinely is $30, but I-976 was struck down by the state supreme court in October 2020 for violating the constitution's single-subject rule, which kept every add-on alive: weight fees ($35–$96), filing and service fees, city TBD fees, and the Sound Transit RTA excise. A newer car in Seattle clears $500 without anything optional.
How is the RTA tax on my tabs calculated?
1.1% of your vehicle's original MSRP multiplied by a statutory depreciation percentage: 100% in year one, 95% in year two, 89% in year three, sliding to 10% at year 13+. A $40,000-MSRP car in its third year owes 1.1% of $35,600 - about $392. State law (RCW 81.104.160) requires Sound Transit to keep using this 1996 schedule until bonds sold before 2015 are paid off.
Why does the RTA value my car above what it's worth?
The 1996 depreciation schedule front-loads value: it assumes cars hold 95% after one year and 89% after two, when real-world resale is far lower. Courts upheld it because the bond contracts were written against that schedule. Practical upshot: you can't appeal the valuation by showing your car's actual market price - only an MSRP error is correctable.
What's a Transportation Benefit District fee?
A per-vehicle city fee collected with your tabs to fund local street maintenance - roughly 100 Washington cities have one, typically $20–$40 by council action. Seattle's is $50. Whether you pay one, and how much, depends purely on the city your vehicle is registered in, not where you drive.
How much extra do electric vehicles pay in Washington?
$225 a year, every year: a $150 electric vehicle registration renewal fee (RCW 46.17.323) plus a separate $75 transportation electrification fee (RCW 46.17.324). Plug-in hybrids that can go 30+ miles on battery pay the same $225; other hybrids pay just the $75. That's on top of the normal weight fee and any RTA/TBD lines.
What changed in Washington registration fees for 2026?
Three things landed January 1, 2026: weight-fee tiers rose to $35/$65/$82.50/$96 (absorbing the old separate $10 add-on), the filing fee went from $4.50 to $6, and office service fees rose to $11 for registrations and $18–$29 for title work. Another weight-fee step is already scheduled for 2029.
Does Washington require any inspection to register?
No emissions test - the statewide program ended January 1, 2020 - and no periodic safety inspection either. Inspections only enter the picture for special cases like out-of-state salvage or homemade vehicles, where a Washington State Patrol VIN inspection is required.
