Overview
That means two identical-looking used sedans can have wildly different registration bills if one started life as a $22,000 base trim and the other as a $38,000 loaded version - even though they're now worth about the same on the used market. Enter the original MSRP and the vehicle's age below to see your real annual fee, including the road-funding surcharge if it's electric or plug-in hybrid.

Michigan registration fees FAQ
How much is my Michigan registration going to cost?
Take the vehicle's original MSRP, multiply by roughly 0.62% for a new registration, then apply a 10% discount for each of the next 3 renewal years until it locks. A $30,000 MSRP vehicle runs about $186 new, dropping to roughly $136/yr by its 4th year - forever.
Why is my registration so much higher than my neighbor's identical-looking car?
Trim level. Michigan bases the fee on the original MSRP, so a loaded trim with a $10,000 higher sticker price pays noticeably more every single year, even after both cars have depreciated to similar resale values.
Does the ad valorem fee ever go up again after it locks?
No - once a vehicle reaches its 4th registration year, the fee is frozen at that level for as long as it's registered in Michigan, regardless of how old the car gets or who owns it next.
What if I don't know the original MSRP?
The Secretary of State's own Registration Fee Calculator on michigan.gov/sos looks it up by VIN. Dealers also print it on the original window sticker (Monroney label), which some owners keep with their records.
Do electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles pay extra to register?
Yes. As of January 1, 2026, fully electric vehicles pay a $267/year surcharge (up from $160) and plug-in hybrids pay $113/year (up from $60) - heavier ones pay more still. The surcharge is tied by formula to Michigan's gas tax rate, so it rose sharply when the state raised gas tax from 31.0¢ to 52.4¢ per gallon. Regular hybrids that don't plug in pay no surcharge at all.
Are motorcycles ad valorem too?
No - motorcycles register at a flat $7 per year regardless of MSRP, one of the cheapest registration costs of any vehicle type in the country.
