Ohio Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator

Ohio's registration bill has three moving parts that most drivers lump into one number. The state charges $36 a year for a passenger car - a $20 base tax plus a $16 additional fee that rose from $11 on January 1, 2026 under House Bill 96. Your deputy registrar (the license agency, not a state office) adds an $8 service fee for processing. Then your county - and sometimes your city or township on top of the county - adds its own permissive tax, anywhere from $0 to $30 in $5 steps.

Every county, and often every city or township inside it, can add its own $5-step permissive tax to your plate - up to $30 total per vehicle.

Annual registration total

$59.00

  • State registration ($20 base + $16 additional fee)$36.00
  • Deputy registrar service fee$8.00
  • County/township permissive taxvaries by taxing district, $5 steps to $30$15.00

A newly purchased vehicle also owes the $18 title fee and sales tax at the county Clerk of Courts - see the Ohio TTL calculator for the full picture.

Overview

That permissive-tax layer is why two Ohioans with identical cars, a few miles apart in different taxing districts, can see totals $15 or more apart on the same renewal notice. Electric and hybrid owners add a flat surcharge on top: $200 for a battery EV, $150 for a plug-in hybrid, $100 for a regular hybrid, charged every single year to offset the gas tax those vehicles don't pay.

Ohio registration fees FAQ

How much does it cost to register a car in Ohio per year?

Between $44 and $74 for a standard gas car: $36 state fee + $8 deputy registrar fee + $0–$30 county/township permissive tax. Electric vehicles add $200, plug-in hybrids $150, and regular hybrids $100 on top of that.

Why did registration fees go up in 2026?

House Bill 96, effective January 1, 2026, raised the state's additional registration fee from $11 to $16 and the deputy registrar service fee from $5 to $8, to fund Ohio State Highway Patrol operations. The base $20 tax and the county permissive tax were unaffected.

What is a permissive tax and who sets it?

It's a local option tax any county - and many cities or townships within it - can levy on vehicle registrations under Ohio Revised Code 4504.02, in $5 increments up to $30 total per vehicle per year. Multiple taxing districts (county, city, transit authority) can stack, which is why totals vary block to block near county and city lines.

Do hybrids really pay a registration surcharge in Ohio?

Yes - $100 a year for a standard hybrid, on top of the $36 base. It's controversial enough that Ohio lawmakers have introduced bills to eliminate the hybrid fee specifically (leaving EV and plug-in hybrid fees in place), so check current status before assuming it still applies.

Does Ohio require an annual safety inspection?

No - Ohio has never required a general safety inspection to register a passenger vehicle. The only testing requirement is E-Check emissions testing, and only in seven Northeast Ohio counties.

Can I register a vehicle online in Ohio?

Renewals, yes, through OPLATES.com. A first-time registration for a newly purchased or newly titled vehicle has to happen in person at a deputy registrar license agency, since it involves physical plates and proof of the completed title transfer.
