New York Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator

Most states charge a flat registration fee or scale it by value. New York scales it by weight: a two-year table that climbs in roughly 100-lb steps from $26 for the lightest cars to $140 for anything at 6,951 lbs or heavier, with a $32.50 minimum that mostly matters for tiny EVs and 6-cylinder-plus vehicles under 2,050 lbs.

Use unladen weight from the title, not GVWR - the DMV table runs in 100-lb steps from $26 up to $140 for 2 years.

New York taxes and registers your car at the rate for where YOU live, not where you bought it or where the dealer sits.

2-year registration total

$66.50

  • Registration, 2-year (2,851–3,550 lbs - midsize sedan (most common))$56.50
  • County/NYC vehicle use tax (2-yr)$5/year, collected by the DMV with registration$10.00

First-time registration of a just-purchased vehicle also owes the $50 title fee, $25 plate fee, and sales tax - see the New York TTL calculator for the full total.

Overview

For most drivers the weight fee is the whole story. But if you live in the 12-county Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District - NYC's five boroughs plus Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland - two more charges attach automatically: a flat $50 MCTD supplemental fee, and a county or NYC 'vehicle use tax' that runs $10 to $60 for the two-year term depending on your county and the vehicle's weight. Pick your weight band and county below.

New York registration fees FAQ

How much does it cost to register a car in New York?

For 2 years: $26 to $140 depending on unladen weight - a typical midsize sedan around 3,000–3,500 lbs runs about $48.50 to $56.50. Add the $50 MCTD fee and $10–$60 use tax if you're in the 12-county downstate metro district.

Where do I find my car's unladen weight?

It's on the vehicle's title or the manufacturer's certificate of origin - NOT the same as gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) on the door-jamb sticker, which includes passenger and cargo capacity. The DMV table uses unladen (curb) weight only.

Do electric vehicles pay more to register in New York?

No extra surcharge - EVs pay the same weight-based fee as gas cars, hitting the $32.50 minimum for most lightweight models. New York is one of roughly nine states with no dedicated EV registration fee, unlike Texas ($200/yr) or California.

What is the MCTD fee and why don't upstate drivers pay it?

It's a $25/year ($50 per 2-year registration) fee funding the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District's transit system, charged only to residents of the 12 counties in that district: the five NYC boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland. Everyone else skips it entirely.

What's the difference between the use tax and sales tax?

Sales tax is a one-time charge on the purchase. The county/NYC vehicle use tax is a small, recurring charge collected by the DMV at every registration and renewal - $15 or $30/year in NYC-area counties, $5 or $10/year elsewhere, depending partly on the vehicle's weight.

Can I register a car in New York without a New York license?

You need a valid NY driver's insurance policy on the vehicle, but out-of-state licensed drivers can register a car here (common for people who just moved). You generally have a window after establishing residency to switch your license, separate from the registration deadline.
