Wyoming registration fees FAQ
How much does it cost to register a car in Wyoming?
It depends almost entirely on the vehicle's original sticker price and age. A new $35,000 car's first-year total is about $30 state fee + $630 county fee ($35,000 × 60% × 3%) = $660. A 10-year-old version of that same car pays $30 + $157.50 = $187.50 a year - same formula, lower depreciation percentage.
Why is my registration so much higher than my neighbor's identical-looking car?
The county fee is based on the ORIGINAL factory price of your specific vehicle, including any factory options, not a generic model average - and it depends on model-year age. A loaded trim registered new will cost noticeably more than a base trim of the same age.
Does the county fee ever stop increasing my bill as the car ages?
It only ever goes down, then flattens. The schedule is 60% (year 1), 50% (year 2), 40% (year 3), 30% (year 4), 20% (year 5), then a permanent 15% from year six onward - it never reaches zero as long as you keep the vehicle registered.
Do trailers pay the county fee too?
No - trailers pay only the flat state fee, banded by weight from $5 (1,000 lbs or less) up to $90 (6,001+ lbs). The factory-price county fee applies to cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
Does Wyoming require an emissions or safety inspection to register?
No. Wyoming has no statewide vehicle safety or emissions inspection program - the only inspection you'll ever face is the one-time $10 VIN check when titling a vehicle whose last title came from another state.
Is the 3% county rate the same everywhere?
Yes - the depreciation schedule and the 3% ratio are set in state law and apply identically in all 23 counties. Only your vehicle sales tax rate (4%–7%) changes by county; the registration formula does not.
