Overview
Electric and hybrid owners pay more, not less - a $200 annual road-use fee for fully electric vehicles and $100 for hybrids, stacked on top of the normal fee, since neither pays gas tax at the pump. One thing the fee itself won't tell you: the DMV won't process this registration at all unless you can show the county sheriff's office has your personal property tax receipt - that's a separate annual bill covered on our registration renewal page.

West Virginia registration fees FAQ
How much does it cost to register a car in West Virginia?
$51.50 a year for a standard Class A car or truck: $50 base plus a $1 litter fee and 50-cent insurance-enforcement fee. Electric vehicles add $200 a year, hybrids add $100.
Why is my motorcycle registration $16 instead of the $8 I saw quoted?
The $8 is only the Class G base fee. West Virginia adds a $6.50 motorcycle safety fee plus the standard $1 litter and 50-cent insurance fees every registered vehicle pays, bringing the real annual total to $16.
Can I register a car in West Virginia without a personal property tax receipt?
No. WV Code bars the DMV from issuing or renewing a registration unless you present a receipt showing the vehicle's personal property tax is paid for the current year or the year before, or an assessor's affidavit if you're new to the county.
What does the litter fee actually pay for?
It funds the state's Highway Litter Control Fund - roadside cleanup and litter-prevention programs. It's a flat $1 on every registration and renewal, cars and motorcycles alike.
Do trailers register the same way as cars in West Virginia?
No - trailers fall under their own classes (Class C or Class T) with separate, generally lower fees based on weight, not the Class A car schedule this calculator covers.
Is the EV fee charged even on a used electric vehicle I just bought?
Yes - the $200 fee is tied to the vehicle running exclusively on electricity, not to when it was purchased. Every annual registration or renewal for a fully electric vehicle carries it.
