Overview
Electric vehicles add a fee that has nothing to do with weight: a flat annual charge that started at $250 in mid-2024 and climbs $10 every July 1 until it caps at $290, meant to replace the gas tax EVs don't pay at the pump. The calculator below applies your exact weight class, age band, and any senior discount or EV surcharge - for the four-year lump sum new cars pay at first titling, use the TTL calculator instead.

02 - Step by step
How registration is set in New Jersey
- 1
The MVC classifies your vehicle by gross weight - 3,500 lbs is the line between the light and heavy fee columns.
- 2
It then checks whether the model year is within 2 years of the current year (the higher rate) or older (the lower rate).
- 3
Seniors 65+ and drivers with a qualifying disability can apply the $7/year discount to either column.
- 4
Zero-emission vehicles add the flat annual EV fee on top, regardless of weight class.
- 5
A vehicle's very first registration (never previously titled) is charged for 4 years upfront instead of 1 - see New Jersey's TTL calculator for that total.

New Jersey registration fees FAQ
How much does it cost to register a car in New Jersey per year?
$46.50 to $84.00 depending on weight and model-year age: light vehicles (≤ 3,500 lbs) pay $46.50 once past 2 years old or $59.00 while newer; heavier vehicles pay $71.50 or $84.00 on the same age split. Seniors and drivers with disabilities get $7 off either rate.
Why does my registration go down after year two?
New Jersey's fee chart gives newer vehicles (within 2 model years) a slightly higher rate than older ones in the same weight class - $59.00 vs $46.50 for light vehicles, $84.00 vs $71.50 for heavy ones. It's built into the standard fee schedule, not a penalty or a discount you have to request.
What counts as the 'heavy' weight class?
Anything over 3,500 lbs gross vehicle weight - most full-size pickups, three-row SUVs, and vans land here, while sedans, hatchbacks, and compact/mid-size SUVs usually fall in the ≤ 3,500 lb class. Check your vehicle's specs or door-jamb sticker if you're not sure which side of the line you're on.
How does the zero-emission vehicle fee actually work?
It's a flat annual charge layered on top of the normal weight-based fee, created to replace the gas-tax revenue EVs don't generate. It started at $250 for the year beginning July 1, 2024, rises $10 every July 1 after that, and caps at $290 - the current annual rate is $270.
Do plug-in hybrids pay the EV fee?
No - the fee targets vehicles certified as zero-emission under California Air Resources Board standards, which means fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids that still burn gasoline are not zero-emission vehicles for this purpose and don't owe the fee.
Is there a discount for renewing online?
New Jersey doesn't discount the base registration rate for renewing online, but it does save you a trip - renewals are available through the MVC's online portal for most passenger vehicles with no outstanding inspection or insurance issues.
